In the middle of summer, the last thing children want to think about is school. However, summer is a time when many students regress and lose knowledge that they acquired during the past school year. This regression is sometimes referred to as the ‘summer slide.’ This means that summer is very important on keeping your child on track for the upcoming school year!
Summer Slide- What is it?
The summer slide is a regression in knowledge and skills. Students can slide backwards two to three months, most commonly in math and reading skills. This means that when they go back to school in the fall, they could be starting at the level they were at in March or April. It’s important to stay on top of skills during the summer for children to do their best!
Ways to Beat the Summer Slide-
Beating the summer slide may seem like a difficult task. Between sports, camps, games, and other activities, adding one more thing to the list doesn’t seem ideal. Below are a few ideas to refresh skills without ruining the fun of summer!
Libraries are a great resource to utilize in the summer. Make it a weekly or biweekly adventure to check out new books or attend a class. Many libraries also offer summer activities, such as guest speakers and educational presentations. No matter what it is, libraries are sure to help beat the summer slide.
Think about summer activities that your children love. Days at the pool? Sleepovers with friends? Reward them with extra fun if they spend extra time reading or refreshing skills. Having something to look forward to is a great motivator!
Whether it is a local tutoring center or a private tutor, having your child meet with a tutor weekly or biweekly is a great way to refresh skills and continue learning. Tutoring services are a great way to continue a routine once the school year ends, and may make the routine back into school a bit easier.
Whether it is ten minutes or an hour a day, every little bit helps when it comes to summer time learning. It may not be thought of as a priority at the time, but it will be well worth it when the new school year rolls around!
